Smart Interior Solution for Your Loved Ones

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we spend a majority of our time indoors – whether it’s at work, school, or in our homes. Given this, it is important to ensure that the air inside our buildings is clean and safe to breathe. The importance of indoor air quality in our homes, schools, and workplaces cannot be overstated. It is critical for the well-being of the people who spend their time in these spaces, as poor air quality can lead to a variety of health problems. Indoor air quality is especially important in our homes, as we spend the majority of our time there. Similarly, schools and workplaces are places where we spend a significant amount of time, and the air quality in these spaces can greatly impact our ability to learn and work effectively.

Air quality in the building space is influenced by many factors, including building materials, structures, upholstery materials for furniture, interiors, radiation, and so on. In addition, activities inside the building, such as the use of environmentally unfriendly energy, the use of pesticides, cleaning chemicals, and indoor smoking can also affect air quality. These chemicals can emit pollutants that can persist in the building for a long time. To minimize these threats, the Indonesian Ministry of Health has established guidelines for indoor air quality, particularly focusing on chemical quality. These guidelines help protect ourselves and our loved ones from harmful materials like VOCs that may be present in buildings. A key requirement set by the Ministry is a limit on VOC exposure, with a maximum of 3ppm allowed for 8 hours.

What are VOCs?

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) is a classification given to certain chemicals that easily and quickly evaporate and develop into odorous gases and vapors that can significantly increase the accumulation of potentially hazardous substances in the air, especially when released indoors. EPA states that VOCs levels are consistently higher indoors, with indoor VOCs levels reaching up to 10 times higher than outdoor levels.

VOCs formed a gas by a variety of products such as paints and lacquerware, cleaning and disinfecting fluids, pesticides, building materials and coatings, office equipment such as machinery photocopies and printers, craft materials and graphics, including glue and adhesives, permanent markers, and solvents photography.

VOCs can damage the respiratory system, which can lead to an oxygen deficit in the body. Not only are there direct effects on the lungs, but without enough oxygen reaching the body’s vital organs, other issues can arise. Even short-term exposure leads to respiratory problems, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. With long-term exposure to VOCs, the health effects can lead to organ damage, neurological problems, and even cancer.

What can you do to cope with VOCs?

Now we already know how dangerous VOCs are. Furthermore, here are some solutions according to the guidelines from Indonesian Ministry of Health for you to minimize and to avoid the threats of the VOCs exposure.

  1. Improve ventilation when using products that emit VOCs.

  2. Does not store material containers containing VOCs whether those still used or not used.

  3. Use household products according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  4. Keep ingredients containing VOCs out of the reach of children and pets.

  5. Never mix household care products, unless according to the instructions on the packaging label.

  6. Do not smoke indoor.

  7. Reduce exposure by protecting/closing all exposed surfaces of panels and other furniture.
